This Privacy Policy describes how Universe collects, uses, discloses, and safeguards personal information in connection with our mobile application, website, and related online services.

By accessing or using the Services, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy and agree to the handling of your information as set out herein.

Universe is a social networking platform designed primarily for university students to create, share, and engage with content and campus communities.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information directly from you, automatically through your use of the Services, and from certain third parties, as further described below.

1.1 Information You Provide Us

We may collect the following categories of information that you voluntarily provide:

  • Account credentials and identifiers: Username, password, email address, display name, and similar identifiers.

  • Academic and profile information: University name, faculty or department, degree program, expected graduation year, major, profile photograph, biography, and any other profile fields you choose to make available.

  • User generated content: Text posts, photos, videos, messages, and any other content or materials you upload, stream, or otherwise make available via the Services.

  • Communications with us: Information you provide when you contact customer support, submit feedback, participate in surveys, or report abuse or technical issues.

You may decline to provide certain information; however, this may limit or prevent your ability to use some or all features of the Services.

1.2 Information Collected Automatically

When you access or use the Services, we may automatically collect certain information, including:

  • Usage and interaction data: Details about your activity on the Services, such as the content you view or interact with, the profiles you follow, search queries, features you use, timestamps, and engagement metrics.

  • Device and technical data: Internet Protocol (IP) address, device identifiers, device type and model, operating system, app version, language and time zone settings, and diagnostic information (including crash logs and performance data).

  • Cookies and similar technologies: We use cookies, software development kits (SDKs), local storage, and similar technologies to authenticate users, remember preferences, measure usage, and improve the Services. You may manage certain cookies through your browser or device settings, although some features may not function properly if cookies are disabled.

1.3 Information from Third Parties

We may receive information about you from third party sources, including:

  • Authentication and signing providers: If you choose to register or sign in via a third party service, we may receive information such as your name, email address, and basic enrollment attributes, subject to the permissions you grant to that provider.

  • Analytics and measurement partners: Aggregated or de-identified usage data that assists us in understanding how the Services are used, identifying trends, and improving performance and security.

2. How We Use Your Information

We process personal information for the purposes set out below and only to the extent permitted by applicable law.

We may use your information to:

  • Provide and operate the Services: Create and manage user accounts, deliver core social features (including feeds, messaging, comments, reactions, and recommendations), and ensure the functionality, stability, and availability of the Services.

  • Personalize and enhance user experience: Tailor content, recommendations, and features based on your activity, stated preferences, and university context, including suggesting content, groups, or profiles that may be of interest.

  • Maintain safety, integrity, and compliance: Monitor and investigate suspicious or malicious activity; detect, prevent, and respond to spam, abuse, harassment, academic misconduct, fraud, security incidents, and violations of our Terms of Use or applicable law.

  • Improve, research, and develop: Analyze usage patterns and performance; test, refine, and develop new features and services; conduct internal research and statistical analysis in de-identified or aggregated form.

  • Communicate with you: Send you transactional and service related messages (for example, security alerts, account notices, and updates to our terms or policies), and—where permitted and subject to your preference—send you surveys or information about new features or initiatives.

  • Fulfill legal and regulatory obligations: Comply with keeping, reporting, and other obligations imposed by applicable law, regulations, or court orders, and respond to lawful requests from public or governmental authorities.

3. How We Disclose Your Information

We do not share personal information except as described in this Privacy Policy or as disclosed to you at the time of collection.

3.1 Disclosures Within the Services

Depending on your settings and the design of features, we may make certain information available to other users, such as:

  • Public or community visible content: Posts, photos, videos, reactions, comments, and limited profile elements may be viewable by other users within your university network or broader communities, as determined by your privacy settings and the nature of the feature.

  • Direct interactions: Content you send directly to other users will be disclosed to those recipients, consistent with the functionality of the Services.

You should assume that content you make public or share with others may be copied, shared, or caught by recipients or third parties.

3.2 Service Providers and Business Partners

We may disclose information to carefully selected third party service providers who perform services on our behalf, such as:

  • Cloud hosting, data storage, and content delivery providers

  • Analytics and measurement providers

  • Customer support and communication platforms

  • Security, fraud prevention, and technical maintenance providers

These providers are engaged under contractual obligations to process personal information only on our instructions and to implement appropriate security measures.

3.3 Legal, Regulatory, and Safety Disclosures

We may access, preserve, and disclose information where we reasonably believe such action is necessary or appropriate to:

  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, legal processes, or enforceable governmental or regulatory requests.

  • Protect and defend our rights, property, or interests, including the enforcement of our Terms of Use and other agreements.

  • Protect the rights, safety, and security of our users or the public, including in connection with the investigation and prevention of fraud, security incidents, or other harmful or illegal activities.

3.4 Corporate Transactions

In connection with any merger, acquisition, reorganization, sale of assets, financing, or similar corporate transaction, or in the event of insolvency, bankruptcy, or receivership, information may be transferred as a business asset subject to the protections and limitations described in this Privacy Policy and any additional safeguards required by law.

We do not exchange your personal information for monetary consideration as a sale in the ordinary sense of that term. If applicable law treats certain categories of data sharing as a sale or sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising, we will provide any required notices and mechanisms to exercise your choices.

4. Your Rights and Choices

We seek to provide you with meaningful control over your personal information.

Subject to applicable law and technical capabilities, you may have the ability to:

  • Access and update information: Review and edit certain account and profile details directly through the Services.

  • Manage content and visibility: Modify privacy settings, adjust who may view your content or profile, and delete posts or other content you have created.

  • Control communications: Manage push and email notifications using in-app settings and/or your device or browser controls.

  • Request account deletion: Request deactivation or deletion of your account via in-app tools or by contacting us using the details in Section 10 below. Upon account deletion, we will delete or anonymize personal information, except where retention is required or permitted for legal, security, or legitimate business purposes.

  • Manage cookies and tracking technologies: Configure browser or device settings to block or delete cookies and similar technologies, recognizing that certain features of the Services may not function correctly if such technologies are disabled.

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may also have additional rights, such as the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information; to object to or restrict certain processing; or to data portability. We will respond to such requests in accordance with applicable law and may require you to verify your identity before fulfilling a request.

5. Data Security

We implement commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. These measures may include access controls, encryption in transit, secure development practices, and periodic review of our security procedures.

However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is entirely secure. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and for all activities undertaken using your account. You should notify us promptly if you believe your account or credentials have been compromised.

6. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including:

  • Providing and maintaining the Services and your account.

  • Complying with legal, regulatory, accounting, and reporting obligations.

  • Resolving disputes and enforcing our agreements.

Retention periods may vary depending on the type of data, the nature of our relationship with you, and legal or operational considerations. In certain circumstances, we may retain de-identified or aggregated information that no longer identifies you for analytical, research, or statistical purposes.

7. International Data Transfers

Where permitted by law, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in countries or territories other than the one in which you reside, which may have data protection laws that differ from those in your jurisdiction.

Where we transfer personal information across borders, we will take appropriate steps to ensure that such transfers comply with applicable data protection requirements, which may include the use of contractual safeguards or other legally recognized transfer mechanisms.

8. Children and Underage Users

The Services are intended primarily for individuals who meet the minimum age required under applicable law in their jurisdiction (for example, 13 or 16 years of age) and who are, in principle, enrolled or seeking enrollment at a university or comparable institution of higher education.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from individuals who do not meet the applicable minimum age threshold. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child in violation of this requirement, we will take reasonable steps to delete such information and, where appropriate, terminate the associated account. If you believe that we may have collected information from a child in such circumstances, please contact us using the details in Section 10.

9. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may revise this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technologies, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make material changes, we will update the Last Updated date at the top of this document and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.

Your continued access to or use of the Services following the effective date of any changes constitutes your acknowledgment of the revised Privacy Policy.
